Dharana
Dharana is the sixth limb of Ashtanga Yoga. Following Pratyahara, once the senses are withdrawn, the mind is directed toward a single point of focus.
The Power of Focus
The word Dharana comes from the root dhri, meaning "to hold." It is the act of holding the mind on a specific object, mantra, or breath.
Distinction between Dharana and Dhyana
- Dharana (Concentration): Efforts are made to bring the mind back to the object of focus.
- Dhyana (Meditation): The flow of focus becomes effortless and continuous.
Benefits
- Cognitive Clarity: Sharpens the intellect and improves memory.
- Inner Stability: Creates a foundation for deep spiritual experiences.
- Stress Reduction: By limiting the mind's wandering, it induces deep relaxation.
