Pratyahara

Pratyahara is the fifth limb of the Ashtanga Yoga system defined by Sage Patanjali. It literally means "withdrawal of the senses" (Prati = against, Ahara = nourishment or food).

The Bridge to the Inner World

If the first four limbs (Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama) are considered external practices, and the last three (Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi) are internal, Pratyahara is the bridge between them.

Key Insights

  • Sensory Control: It's not about suppressing senses, but about mastery over them.
  • Energy Conservation: By withdrawing from external distractions, we conserve psychic energy for meditation.
  • Mental Peace: A mind that isn't constantly reactive to sensory input remains calm and focused.
