Chandrasekhara Ashtakam was composed by the sage Markandeya. Destined to die at sixteen, he took refuge at a Shiva linga as Yama came for him and poured out these verses; Shiva appeared, drove off death, and granted him deathlessness. Each verse calls on Chandrasekhara — the moon-crowned one — with the refrain pāhimām / rakṣamām, "protect me, guard me," and closes by asking what Yama can possibly do to one who has taken his shelter.
