Sri Ganesha Ashtakam is an eight-verse hymn to Ganesha, the leader of the ganas, traditionally ascribed to Vyasa and printed in the puranic collections (sources variously place it in the Padma or Narada Purana). Every verse closes on the same refrain — vande'haṃ gaṇanāyakam, "I bow to the leader of the ganas" — describing him form by form: the single tusk, the great body bright as molten gold, the broad eyes, the mouse he rides into the war of gods and asuras. A closing phalashruti promises release from all sins to whoever recites it with devotion.
