Ganesha Sahasranama Stotram is the thousand-name hymn from the Ganesha Purana, in the Upasana Khanda, where it appears as a conversation: the sage asks how Ganesha came to teach the thousand names, Brahma answers, and Ganapati himself then speaks them. The frame story is Shiva's — having set out to burn the three cities without first honouring Ganesha, he found himself beset by obstacles, worshipped Mahaganapati, and was given this stotram in return. The text is recited in four parts: the purva pithika that tells that story, the nyasa and dhyanam that prepare the reciter, the thousand names themselves running to 170 verses, and a long phala sruti describing what the recitation is said to bring.
