Kasi Vishwanatha Ashtakam is Adi Shankaracharya's eight-verse hymn to Vishwanatha, lord of Varanasi, composed on his travels among the great pilgrimage sites. It opens gaṅgā taraṅga ramaṇīya jaṭā kalāpaṃ — "whose matted hair is lovely with the waves of the Ganga" — and each verse ends vārāṇaśī purapatiṃ bhaja viśvanātham, "worship Vishwanatha, lord of the city of Varanasi." He is sung as three-eyed and tiger-skinned, forever half Gauri's, the forest fire that burns away death, sorrow and old age.
