Shivashtakam is an eight-verse hymn of surrender to Shiva, the auspicious one, opening prabhuṃ prāṇanāthaṃ vibhuṃ viśvanāthaṃ. Each verse closes śivaṃ śaṅkaraṃ śambhu mīśānamīḍē — "I praise Shiva, Shankara, Shambhu, the lord." It sings him wearing a garland of skulls and a net of serpents, the Ganga surging through his matted hair, half his body given to the daughter of the mountain. Unlike several of its companion Shiva ashtakams, no single author is firmly established for this hymn.
