Verse 1
विश्वं विष्णुर्वषट्कारो भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः । भूतकृद्भूतभृद्भावो भूतात्मा भूतभावनः ॥
viśvaṃ viṣṇur-vaṣaṭkāro bhūta-bhavya-bhavat-prabhuḥ | bhūtakṛd-bhūtabhṛd-bhāvo bhūtātmā bhūtabhāvanaḥ ||
Meaning
He is the Universe itself; the all-pervading Vishnu; the very utterance of vaṣaṭ in Vedic offering; the Lord of past, future, and present. He is the maker of all beings, the bearer of all beings, pure existence itself, the inner self of all beings, and the cause of their becoming.
Context
The very first verse of the stotra establishes Vishnu as both transcendent (the universe, Lord of all time) and immanent (the inner self of every being). The opening name विश्वम् — "the universe" — signals at once that He is not separate from creation.
