Tithi

तिथिः

A tithi is the time it takes the Moon to move 12° further ahead of the Sun in the sky. Because the Moon doesn't move at a constant speed, tithis aren't a fixed length — some finish in under 20 hours, others stretch past a full day. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month: 15 as the Moon waxes toward fullness (Shukla Paksha) and 15 as it wanes back toward darkness (Krishna Paksha).

Why it matters

Tithi decides WHEN a festival happens. Ganesh Chaturthi always falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi — the 4th tithi of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada — not on a fixed Gregorian date, which is why the festival lands on a different day every year.

How it's calculated

We measure how far ahead the Moon is of the Sun, in degrees, and divide by 12. This works the same way no matter which ayanamsa (zodiac reference point) you use, because both positions shift together and the difference between them stays the same.
