Vaara is simply the day of the week, but in the traditional system each of the 7 days is named after — and ruled by — a graha (a planetary body): Sunday for Surya (Sun), Monday for Chandra (Moon), Tuesday for Mangala (Mars), Wednesday for Budha (Mercury), Thursday for Guru (Jupiter), Friday for Shukra (Venus), and Saturday for Shani (Saturn).
