The twelve names of Ganesha: whoever recites or even hears them — at the start of study, at a marriage, when entering or departing, in battle or in crisis — no obstacle arises for them.
शुक्लांबरधरं देवं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजं । प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशांतये ॥४॥
Meditate on the deity clad in white, moon-hued and four-armed, with a gracious face, for the quelling of all obstacles.
सर्वमंगलमांगल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके । शरण्ये त्र्यंबके गौरि नारायणि नमोऽस्तुते ॥५॥ सर्वदा सर्वकार्येषु नास्ति तेषाममंगलम् । येषां हृदिस्थो भगवान्मंगलायतनं हरिः ॥६॥ तदेव लग्नं सुदिनं तदेव ताराबलं चंद्रबलं तदेव । विद्याबलं दैवबलं तदेव लक्ष्मीपते तेंऽघ्रियुगं स्मरामि ॥७॥ लाभस्तेषां जयस्तेषां कुतस्तेषां पराजयः । येषामिंदीवरश्यामो हृदयस्थो जनार्दनः ॥८॥
विनायकं गुरुं भानुं ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वरान् । सरस्वतीं प्रणौम्यादौ सर्वकार्यार्थसिद्धये ॥९॥ अभीप्सितार्थसिद्धयर्थ पूजितो यः सुरासुरैः । सर्वविघ्नहरस्तस्मै गणाधिपतये नमः ॥१०॥ सर्वेष्वारब्धकार्येषु त्रयस्त्रिभुवनेश्वराः । देवा दिशन्तु न सिद्धिं ब्रह्मेशानजनार्दनाः ॥११॥ गणनाथसरस्वतीरविशुक्रबृहस्पतीन् । पंचैतानि स्मरेन्नित्यं वेदवाणीप्रवत्तये ॥१२॥
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णु गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः । गुरुः साक्षात्परब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥१३॥ यत्र योगेश्वरः कृष्णो यत्र पार्थो धनुर्धरः । तत्र श्रीर्विजयो भूतिर्ध्रुवा नीतिर्मतिर्मम ॥१४॥
The guru is Brahma, the guru is Vishnu, the guru is Maheshwara; the guru is verily the supreme Brahman — salutations to that guru. Where Krishna the lord of yoga is, and where Partha the archer is, there are fortune, victory, prosperity, and steadfast wisdom.

ॐ गणानां त्वा गणपतिं हवामहे कविं कवीनामुपमश्रवस्तमम् । ज्येष्ठराजं ब्रह्मणां ब्रह्मणस्पत आ नः शृण्वन्नूतिभिः सीद सादनम् ॥
ऋद्धिसिद्धिसहितं सांगं सपरिवारं सायुधं सशक्तिकं श्रीमहागणपति स्मरामि श्रीमहागणाधिपतये नमः । निर्विघ्नं कुरु ॥

Asana Shuddhi
Purifying the seat
1.पृथिवीति मंत्रस्य मेरुपृष्ठ ऋषिः कूर्मेः देवता । सुतलं छंदः । आसने विनियोगः ॥
( Touch the ground. )
2.ॐ पृथ्वि त्वया धृता लोका देवि त्वं विष्णुना धृता । त्वं च धारय मां देवि पवित्रं करु चासनम् ॥
O Earth, the worlds are borne by you, and you are borne by Vishnu. Bear me too, O Devi, and make this seat pure.
3.ऊध्र्वकेशि विरूपाक्षि मांसशोणितभोजने । तिष्ठ देवि शिखाबंधे चामुंडे ह्यपराजिते ॥
Bhutotsarana
Clearing the space before the pooja begins
1.अपसर्पन्तु वामदेवो भूतान्यनुष्टुप भूतोत्सादने विनियोगः ।
( Take akshata in your hand and cast it toward the south. )
2.ॐ अपसर्पन्तु ते भूता ये भूता भूमिसंस्थिताः । ये भूता विघ्नकर्तारस्ते गच्छन्तु शिवाज्ञया ॥ अपक्रामंतु भूतानि पिशाचा सर्वतो दिशम् । सर्वेषामविरोधेन पूजाकर्म समारभे ॥
3.तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्र महाकाय कल्पांतदहनोपम । भैरवाय नमस्तुभ्यमनुज्ञां दातुमर्हसि ॥ पूजाकर्म समारभै ।
4.वामपादतलपार्श्वेन भूमिं त्रिस्ताडयेत् ।
( Touch the sole of the left foot to the ground three times. )
5.देवा आयान्तु । यातुधाना अपयान्तु ॥ विष्णो देवयजनं रक्षस्व इति भूमौ प्रादेशं कूर्यात् ।
( Place the right thumb and index finger on the ground. )
6.मनुष्यगंधनिवारणे विनियोगः । येभ्यो माता इत्यस्य गयःप्लात ऋषिः,विश्वेदेवा देवता,जगती छन्दः । एवापित्र इत्यस्य वामदेवगौतम ऋषिः बृहस्पतिर्देवता, त्रिष्टुप् छन्दः ।

Shadanga Nyasa
Six placements on the body, for purification — sit cross-legged and use both hands
1.अंगुष्ठाभ्यां नमः । हृदयाय नमः ।
( Touch the heart with the index, middle and ring fingers. )
2.तर्जनीभ्यां नमः । शिरसे स्वाहा ।
( Touch the head with the fingers and the middle finger. )
3.मध्यमाभ्यां नमः । शिखायै वषट् ॥
( Touch the place of the shikha with the index, middle finger and thumb. )
4.अनामिकाभ्यां नमः । कवचाय हुम् ॥
( With both hands, touch from the shoulders down to the navel. )
5.कनिष्ठिकाभ्यां नमः । नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् ॥
( Touch the eyes and forehead with the index, middle and ring fingers. )
6.करतलकरपृष्ठाभ्यां नमः । अस्त्राय फट् । भूर्भुवस्वरोम् इति दिग्बंधः ॥
( Clap with both hands. )
Kalasha Pooja
Worship of the water pot
कलशस्य मुखे विष्णुः कंठे रुद्रः समाश्रितः । मूले तत्र स्थितो ब्रह्माः मध्ये मातृगणाः स्मृताः ॥ कुक्षौ तु सागराः सर्वे सप्तद्वीपा वसुंधरा । ऋग्वेदोऽथ यजुर्वेद सामवेदो ह्यथर्वणः ॥ अंगेश्व सहिताः सर्वे कलशं तु समाश्रिताः । अत्र गायत्रीसावित्री शांतिः पुष्टिकरी तथा । आयान्तु देवपूजार्थ दुरितक्षयकारकाः ॥
( Stick a flower smeared with sandal paste and akshata onto the water-filled kalasha. )
गंगे च यमुने चैव गोदावरि सरस्वति । नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरि जलेऽस्मिन्सन्निधिं कुरु ॥ कलशाय नमः । सर्वोपचारार्थे गंधाक्षतपुष्पं समर्पयामि ।

O Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Sarasvati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri — be present in this water.
In Indian tradition the kalasha is a symbol of auspiciousness, and worshipping it at any auspicious undertaking is the custom. Kalasha pooja is the worship of the whole cosmos: the entire universe is held within the kalasha. Vishnu resides at its mouth, Shankara at its neck, Brahma at its base, and the mother goddesses at its middle. It holds the sacred waters of all oceans and the seven-continented earth. All four Vedas — Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva — are considered to dwell in it, together with their six limbs. The deities Gayatri and Savitri, who grant constant peace and nourishment, are seated in it. It holds the waters of the seven rivers — Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Sarasvati, Narmada, Sindhu and Kaveri. The prayer says: "You are Shiva, you are Vishnu, you are Brahma; O cosmic deity in the form of the kalasha, in you dwell all five great elements and the life-force." No pooja takes place without a kalasha, which is why all of this is explained here.
Shankha Pooja
Worship of the conch
शंखादौ चंद्रदैवत्यं कुक्षौ वरुणदेवता । पृष्ठे प्रजापतिश्चैव अग्रे गंगासरस्वती ॥ त्रैलोक्ये यानि तीर्थानि वासुदेवाय चाज्ञया । शंखे तिष्ठतिं विप्रेन्द्र तस्माच्छंखं प्रपूजयेत् ॥
( Bathe the conch and offer sandal paste and a flower. Show the shankha mudra and offer namaskara. )
त्वं पुरा सागरोत्पन्नो विष्णुना विधृत करे । नमितः सर्वदेवेश्च पाञ्चजन्य नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ ॐ पाञ्चजन्याय विद्महे । पावमानाय धीमहि । तन्नः शंख प्रचोदयात् । शंखाय नमः । सकलपूजार्थे गंधपुष्पं समर्पयामि ॥
Ghanta Pooja
Worship of the bell
आगमनार्थे तु देवानां गमनार्थ तु रक्षसाम् । कुर्वे घंटारवं तत्र देवताऽह्वानलक्षणम् ॥ घंटायै नमः । सकलपूजार्थे गंधाक्षतपुष्पं समर्पयामि ॥
( Ring the bell. Offer sandal paste, akshata, a flower, and haldi-kumkum to the bell. )
I sound the bell for the coming of the gods and the departure of the demons — it is the sign of invoking the deity.
Deepa Pooja
Worship of the lamp
भो दीप ब्रह्मरूपस्त्वं ज्योतिषां प्रभुरव्ययः । आरोग्यं देहि पुत्रांश्च सर्वार्थाश्च प्रयच्छ मे । यावत्पूजासमाप्तिः स्यात्तावत् त्वं सुस्थिरो भव । दीपदेवताभ्यो नमः । सकलपूजार्थे गंधपुष्पं समर्पयामि ॥
( Offer sandal paste, flowers and haldi-kumkum to the samai with a flower. )
O lamp, you are the form of Brahman, the imperishable lord of all lights. Grant health and progeny and all that is sought. Remain steady until the pooja is complete.
Prokshana
Sprinkling water on the materials and on oneself
अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा । यः स्मरेत्पुंडरीकाक्षं स बाह्माभ्यंतरः शुचिः ॥ पूजाद्रव्याणि संप्रोक्ष्य आत्मानं च प्रोक्षयेत् ।
( Sprinkle water with a durva blade over the pooja materials and over yourself. )
Whether impure or pure, or in whatever state one may be — whoever remembers the lotus-eyed one becomes clean within and without.

अस्य श्रीप्राणप्रतिष्ठामंत्रस्य ब्रह्माविष्णुमहेश्वरः ऋषयः । ऋग्यजुः सामाथर्वाणि छंदासि परा प्रानशक्तिर्देवता । आं बीजम् । ह्रीं शक्तिः । क्रौं कीलकम् । अस्या मूर्तौ देवकलासन्निध्यार्थ प्राणप्रतिष्ठापने विनियोगः ।
ॐ आं,ह्रीं,क्रौं, अं यं रं लं वं शं षं सं हं क्षं अः क्रौं,ह्रीं,आं देवस्य प्राणा इह प्राणाः ॥ ॐ आं,ह्रीं,क्रौं, अं यं रं लं वं शं षं सं हं क्षं अः क्रौं,ह्रीं,आं,देवस्य जीव इह स्थितः ॥ ॐ आं,ह्रीं,क्रौं, अं यं रं लं वं शं षं सं हं क्षं अः क्रौं,ह्रीं,आं, देवस्यवाड्मनश्चक्षुः श्रोत्राजिव्हाघ्राणपाणिपादपायुपस्यादि सर्वेंद्रियाणि सुखं चिरं तिष्ठंतु स्वाहा ॥
ॐ असुनीते पुनरस्मासुचक्षु पुनः प्राणमिहनो धेहिभोगं । ज्योक्पश्येम सूर्यमुच्चरतमनुमते मृळयानः स्वस्ति ।
( Pour one spoon of water over the right hand into the tamhan, then touch Ganapati's feet with a durva shoot. )
अस्य देवस्य पंचदशसंस्कारसिद्धयर्थ पंचदश प्रणवावृत्तिः करिष्ये । ॐ ॐ
( Recite the pranava (Om) fifteen times. )
( Dip two durva shoots in ghee and apply it with them to Ganapati's right eye, then the left, and say this. )
ॐ तच्चक्षुर्देवहितं शुक्रमुच्चरत् । पश्येम शरदः शतं जीवेम शरदं शतम् ॥
( Say this to Ganapati with folded hands. Then offer sandal paste, akshata and a flower at Ganapati's feet, show naivedya of jaggery and banana, and offer namaskara. )
रक्तांभोधिस्थपोतोल्लसदरुणंसरोजधिरूढा कराब्जे । पाशं कोदण्डभिक्षूद्भवमथ गुणमप्यंकुशं पञ्चबाणान् ॥ बिभ्राणा सृक्कपालं त्रिनयनलसिता पीनवक्षोरुहाढ्या । देवी बालर्कवार्णा भवतु सुखकरी प्राणशक्तिः परा नः ॥

वक्रतुंड महाकाय सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभ । निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा ॥

O curved-trunked, mighty-bodied one, radiant as a crore of suns — make all my undertakings free of obstacles, always.
Dhyana
ॐ एकदन्ताय विद्महे वक्रतुंडाय धीमहि । तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात् ॥ एकदन्तं शूर्पकर्णं गजवक्त्रं चतुर्भुजम् । पाशांकुशधरं देवं ध्यायेत् सिद्धिविनायकम् ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । ध्यायामि । ध्यानं समर्पयामि ॥
( Offer a flower and a durva shoot. Offer namaskara. )
Meditate on Siddhivinayaka — single-tusked, winnow-eared, elephant-faced, four-armed, holding the noose and the goad.

1.आगच्छ देवदेवेश तेजोराशे जगत्पते । क्रियामाणां मया पूजां गृहाण गणनायक ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । आवाहनार्थे दूर्वांकुरान् पुष्पांजलि समर्पयामि ॥
( Offer durva shoots and flowers in invocation. Offer namaskara. )

2.नानारत्नसमायुक्तं कार्तस्वरविभूषितम् । आसनं देवदेवेश प्रीत्यर्थ प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । आसनार्थे दूर्वांकुरान् अक्षतान् समर्पयामि ॥
( Offer durva shoots and akshata at Ganapati's feet. )

3.सर्वतीर्थसमानीतं पाद्य गन्धादिसंयुतम् । विघ्नराज गृहाणेदं भगवन् भक्तवत्सल ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । पाद्यो पाद्यं समर्पयामि ।
( Sprinkle water on Ganapati's feet with a durva shoot. )

Arghya
4.अध्र्ये च फलसंयुक्तं गंधपुष्पाक्षतैर्युतम् । गणाध्यक्ष नमस्तेऽस्तु गृहण करुणानिधे ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । हस्तयोः अध्र्येः समर्पयामि ॥ तदर्थे गंधाक्षतपुष्पजलं समर्पयामि ॥
( Offer sandal paste, akshata and a flower on Ganapati. Take water in the spoon, add sandal paste, akshata, a flower, a durva shoot and a betel nut, and give the arghya over Ganapati's hand; release it into the tamhan. )

5.विनायक नमस्तुभ्यं त्रिदशैरभिवंदित । शुद्धोदकेन तोयेन शीघ्रमाचमनं कुरु ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । आचमनीयं समर्पयामि ॥

Snana
6.गंगादिसर्वतीर्थेभ्य आनीतं तोयमुत्तमम् । भक्त्या समर्पितं तुभ्यं स्नानायाभीष्टदायक ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । स्नानं समर्पयामि ॥
( Sprinkle a little pure water on Ganapati with a flower. )

Panchamrita Snana
7.पयो दधि घृतं चैव मधुशर्करया युतम् । पंचामृतेन स्नपनं क्रियतां परमेश्वर ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । पंचामृतस्नानं समर्पयामि ॥ पंचामृत स्नानातंरेण शुद्धोदकस्नानं समर्पयामि । सकलपूजार्थे अक्षतान् समर्पयामि ।
( Offer the panchamrita mixed together, or milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar separately in that order. If mixed, say this mantra. Give pure water in between. )

8.कामधेनो समुदभूतं देवर्षिपितृतृप्तिदम् । पयो ददामि देवेश स्नानार्थ प्रतिगृह्यताम् । श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । पयःस्नानं समर्पयामि । शुद्धोदकस्नानं समर्पयामि ।

( Release water, then place two betel leaves before Ganapati with a betel nut and dakshina on them and release water over them. Then release water into the tamhan with the spoon in the right hand and offer namaskara. Remove the flowers already offered on Ganapati, place them to the north, and perform the abhisheka. )

( Offer durva to Ganapati with the tips turned towards yourself. Then offer the durva with sandal paste and akshata using the following mantras. )

( Wave the dhupa or an incense stick before Ganapati. )

2.आज्यं च वर्तिसंयुक्तं वह्विना योजितं मया । दीपं गृहाण देवेश ममाज्ञानं निवारय ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । दिपं समर्पयामि ।
( Wave the niranjana from the feet to the head while ringing the bell. )
Dipa — the lamp.
Naivedya
3.नैवेद्य गृह्यतां देव भक्ति मे ह्यचलां कुरु । ईत्सितं मे वरं देहि परत्र च परां गतिम् ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । नैवेद्यं समर्पयामि ।
( Place the offering — jaggery, coconut, modak or whatever is being offered — in a vessel, put a tulasi leaf on it, draw a square mandala of water under the vessel, and offer it with this mantra. Name the substance being offered, e.g. gudakhadya-naivedyam or modaka-naivedyam. )

4.ॐ प्राणाय स्वाहा । ॐ अपानाय स्वाहा । ॐ व्यानाय स्वाहा । ॐ उदानाय स्वाहा । ॐ समानाय स्वाहा । ॐ ब्रह्मणे स्वाहा । उत्तरापोशनं समर्पयामि । मुखप्रक्षालनं समर्पयामि । हस्तप्रक्षालनं समर्पयामि । आचमनं समर्पयामि । करोद्वर्तनार्थे चंदनं समर्पयामि ।
( Recite the prana mantras, release a spoonful of water into the tamhan, recite them again, then release three spoonfuls. Apply sandal paste and akshata to a flower and offer it to Ganapati. )

5.पूगीफलं महद्दिव्यं नागवल्लीदलैर्युतम् । कर्पूरैलासमायुक्तं तांबुल प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । पूगीफल -तांबूलं समर्पयामि ।
( Place the betel leaf and nut before Ganapati and release a spoonful of water over the right hand onto them. )

( Place whatever fruit is available before Ganapati and release a spoonful of water. )

( Light the camphor and wave it. Offer namaskara. )

पूजाफलाप्राप्त्यर्थ अघ्र्यप्रदानं करिष्ये ।
( Saying this, take some coins, a betel nut, two durva, sandal paste, akshata and flowers in the right hand, pour water over them, and release the whole arghya. Do this three times. )
नमस्ते देवदेवेश नमस्ते विघ्ननाशक । नमो भक्तानुकं देव गृहाणाघ्र्यं नमोस्तु ते ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । इदमघ्र्य दत्तं न मम ।
गणेशाय नमस्तुभ्यं सर्वकामफलप्रद । वाञ्छितं देहि मे नित्यं गृहाणाघ्र्यं नमोस्तु ते ॥ श्री सिद्धिविनायकाय नमः । इदमघ्र्यं दत्तं न मम ।

यस्य स्मृत्या च नामोक्त्या तपः पूजाक्रियादिषु । न्यूनं संपूर्णतां याति सद्यो वंदे तमच्युतम् ॥ मंत्रहीनं क्रियाहीनं भक्तिहीनं सुरेश्वर । यत्पूजितं मया देव परिपूर्ण तदस्तु मे ॥ रूपं देही जयं देहि यशो देहि द्विषो जहि । पुत्रान्देहि धनं देहि सर्वकामांश्च देहि मे ॥

Asking that whatever was lacking in mantra, in rite or in devotion be made complete.
अनेन यथाज्ञानेन यथामीलितोपचारद्रव्यैः । कृतपूजनेन श्री भगवान गणपतिः प्रीयताम् । ॐ तत्सत् ब्रह्मार्पणमस्तु ॥
( Release the water that concludes the pooja and offer namaskara. Then sing the aartis. After the mantrapushpanjali, recite the Ganesha Gayatri. )
ॐ एकदन्ताय विद्महे वक्रतुंडाय धीमहि । तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात् ॥

Tirtha & Brahmana Pooja
Taking the tirtha, and the offering made in the brahmana's name
Tirthagrahana
अकालमृत्युहरणं सर्वव्याधिविनाशनम् । देवपादोदकं तीर्थ जठरे धारयाम्यहम् ॥
( Drink a spoonful of the tirtha from the abhisheka and the panchamrita snana. )
That which removes untimely death and destroys all disease — the water from the feet of the Lord I hold within me.
Brahmana Pooja
( On Ganesh Chaturthi, even when you have installed your own Ganapati yourself, set aside a betel leaf, a coconut and mahadakshina in the brahmana's name; offer sandal paste, akshata and a flower on them and recite this. Then take them to the brahmana. If a brahmana has come to conduct the pooja, honour him: give sandal paste, akshata, a flower, the betel leaf and mahadakshina into his hand and release water; offer akshata on his head and take his blessing — "shreyah shantih pushtistushtishchastu, shubham bhavatu." )

श्री सिद्धिविनायकप्रीत्यर्थ पंचोपचारैः उत्तरपूजनं करिष्ये ।
( On the day of visarjan, bathe, apply kumkum to the forehead, sit on the asana and make this sankalpa. Then perform the pooja with the five upacharas. )

May all the hosts of gods depart, accepting this earthly worship — to fulfil what is desired, and to come again.

( Release the water. Then sing the aartis. Everyone offers sandal paste and a flower on Ganapati and offers namaskara. Put the visarjan akshata, move the murti slightly, and carry out the visarjan together with music and celebration. )
