klaibyaṃ mā sma gamaḥ pārtha naitattvayyupapadyate | kṣudraṃ hṛdayadaurbalyaṃ tyaktvottiṣṭha parantapa ||
Yield not to feebleness, O Partha! It does not befit you. Cast off this petty faint-heartedness and arise, O vanquisher of foes!
uddharedātmanātmānaṃ nātmānamavasādayet | ātmaiva hyātmano bandhuḥ ātmaiva ripurātmanaḥ ||
Let a man raise himself by his own self; let him not debase himself. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is the enemy of the self.
yadyadācarati śreṣṭhaḥ tattadevetaro janaḥ | sa yatpramāṇaṃ kurute lokastadanuvartate ||
Whatever a great person does, common people follow. Whatever standard he sets by exemplary acts, the world pursues.
ajñaścāśraddadhānaśca saṃśayātmā vinaśyati | nāyaṃ loko'sti na paro na sukhaṃ saṃśayātmanaḥ ||
The ignorant, the faithless, and the doubting self perish. For the one full of doubt, there is neither this world, nor the next, nor happiness.
adhiṣṭhānaṃ tathā kartā karaṇaṃ ca pṛthagvidham | vividhāśca pṛthakceṣṭā daivaṃ caivātra pañcamam ||
The seat of action, the doer, the various instruments, the many kinds of effort, and the divine will as the fifth — these are the five factors of action.
karmaṇaiva hi saṃsiddhimāsthitā janakādayaḥ | lokasaṃgrahamevāpi sampaśyankartumarhasi ||
Janaka and others attained perfection through action alone. Even for the guidance of the world, you should perform action.
muktasaṅgo'nahaṃvādī dhṛtyutsāhasamanvitaḥ | siddhyasiddhyornirvikāraḥ kartā sāttvika ucyate ||
Free from attachment, free from ego, endowed with steadfastness and enthusiasm, unmoved by success or failure — such a doer is called sattvic.
yajñārthāt karmaṇo'nyatra loko'yaṃ karmabandhanaḥ | tadarthaṃ karma kaunteya muktasaṅgaḥ samācara ||
The world is bound by actions other than those performed as sacrifice. Therefore, O son of Kunti, perform action for that purpose alone, free from attachment.
śreyān svadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmāt svanuṣṭhitāt | svadharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ ||
It is far better to perform one's natural prescribed duty, though tinged with faults, than to perform another's prescribed duty, though perfectly. In fact, it is preferable to die in the discharge of one's duty, than to follow the path of another, which is fraught with danger.
sarvopaniṣado gāvo dogdhā gopālanandanaḥ | pārtho vatsaḥ sudhīrbhoktā dugdhaṃ gītāmṛtaṃ mahat ||
Upanishads are like cows that Krishna milks and intelligent Arjuna feasts on the splendid nectar of the Gita like the calf enjoying the cow's milk.
